5 Redecorating Tips to Enhance Your Home's Look and Functionality

Whether your children, career, or friendships are the focus of your life, your home should reflect and support these priorities. If your space seems to be working against you, a few changes can make a major impact on the home's functionality. To better accommodate your needs, try these five home makeover tips.

1. Keep the Office Separate

While working from home has advantages, avoiding distractions is a challenge when you are trying to be productive in a comfortable and familiar environment. By designating a specific area as the office, you avoid distractions and keep your work items organized, maximizing productivity during the workday.

Choose an area that is private. While you might have more space in the living room, it is difficult to focus on emails and phone calls without the ability to close the door, especially when other people are in the house. Turn a spare room, a corner of your bedroom, or even a large closet into an office space.

2. Pay Attention to Lighting

The lighting in a house can impact both your mood and ability to see. If you entertain often, make sure all the lighting in a room matches. Combining overhead white lights with soft lights in the same area interrupts the flow of the room.

Change your lighting fixtures for a simple but impactful update. Fixtures in each room should complement each other and highlight the same focal point. If the property owner wants to keep the original decor, save the old lighting accessories so you can switch them when you move out.

3. Purchase Double-Duty Furniture

According to one report, disorganization creates 80% of clutter in a home. An easy solution to this problem is purchasing furniture that comes with storage; not only can new furniture change the ambiance of a room, but it can also organize items that would typically clutter the residence.

If your couches, chairs, and coffee tables have seen better days, find new pieces that include storage. Whether you need a place for books or the kid's toys, these pieces give you extra storage without taking up additional space.

4. Hang New Artwork

Swapping out artwork is a quick and inexpensive way to change the look of a room. Whether you want to add sophistication to your bar area for parties or soften the mood in your cozy bedroom, a framed painting, poster, or picture can do the trick.

If you have kids, turn their artwork into new decorations. Purchase inexpensive frames and hang their drawings in the playroom. They will love having their masterpieces proudly displayed for others to see.

5. Find a New Property

If your home is not meeting your needs, even after multiple updates, it might be time to pack up and purchase a home that accommodates your lifestyle.

Before booking tours, make a list of all the requirements your new home must have; divide items into categories, such as “Needs” and “Wants.” Doing so helps you and your real estate agent determine which properties are worth looking into.

Redecorating not only changes how a space looks but also how you feel when in it. If your home is not meeting your needs, utilize these tips to enhance its functionality, or keep them in mind when hunting for your new home.
